akinoameIn 2012, Avex Group decided they hadn't made enough money off Kamen Rider fans and thus put together a collection of music videos from the series. To help encourage people to spend their money on these three discs ("Geki," "Takumi," and "Kiwami"...which sounds oddly prophetic in retrospect), they also decided to ask fans which three songs should be made into music videos. The songs chosen were "Elements" from Kamen Rider Blade, the Kamen Rider Kuuga theme song, and "Power to Tearer."
The music videos are rushed and very basic, since they were produced specifically to sell a compilation of better music videos you've already seen. Honestly, Kuuga's is just the singer standing on a cliff on the beach. But something went right with "Power to Tearer" and its design, and it was actually the deciding factor in elevating the song to one of my all-time favorites.
Because neither TV-Nihon nor Over-Time subbed this for some reason, I'm working off my personal favorite translation, a Spanish sub by FourzeFansub. Mind you, calling me "bilingual" is a huge stretch. My father's side of the family are native Spanish speakers, but I was raised in a mostly English-speaking environment. I took Spanish in middle school and high school, but the quality of said education was mixed, from "decent start" to "WHY THE HELL ARE YOU TEACHING ANYTHING?" So...yeah. I'm probably not the best person to comment on the quality of the translation, but from what I do understand (or can parse out with help from Google), it's pretty awesome. And who knows? Maybe one day, I'll try to take up Spanish more seriously this time and use FourzeFansub to expand my vocabulary by cross-comparing it with a series I know by heart. Like Ryuki. Which they do have.
...I have a problem.
So a short portion of this review will focus on the video itself, while the bulk of it will be my attempt at a translation of the translation. That said, let's get started.
The video opens at the industrial fan factory where the W opening takes place, with PuToTyra standing in front of said industrial fan. Note that he's the only one in actual color—everything else is in black-and-white, which I really love. Beyond being visually cool, it also sets up that there's a greyness inherent in the form, that this is Eiji getting way too close to the dark side for comfort, even if he's fighting for the light. Not to mention that he experienced a degree of colorblindness among his other symptoms with Greeedification, but that's probably more coincidental than anything. He'll be fighting some Trash Yummies throughout the video, but the black-and-white does make it hard to see much of what's going on. Not that it matters, since the real action is what happens in the performance. We see a band in front of an identical fan, with two figures ahead of them—Shu Watanabe as Eiji, and Akira Kushida, the voice of the OOO Driver.
Oh. And the mics are back.
As you can see, Shu's wearing something that is decidedly not your typical Eiji style. Mostly because it's all form-fitting and coordinates. His hair is different, and he's not wearing Eiji's usual bracelet. That makes it hard to tell just how in-character he's going for this...which is part of why I love it. PuToTyra forces Eiji to become someone he normally isn't—more aggressive, downright wild. So have some of that wildness reflect in his wardrobe and beg the question of who this really is—or is this just what Eiji is when he gives in to instinct and desire? And he makes a great counterpart to Akira Kushida, who looks decidedly rebellious in his black leather. Eiji is wearing black and white; he's even drenched throughout the performance, as if sweating from the exertion of maintaining that balance between darkness and light, between void and greed.
Honestly, the choice to pair Shu with Akira is perfect, since the two really have similar vocal ranges. I don't know if it's autotune or what, but there are times when Shu really sounds like a younger Akira—there's even a bit at the end that you have to see for yourself, where Akira jumps his cue and starts lip-synching a line that turns out to be Shu's—he himself couldn't tell the difference. And even though it's a year-late music video churned out for a boxset, it's great seeing them really getting into it:
Akira's got manly passion dripping from every pore of his body, so it's impossible for him not to give this as much energy as he can. And Shu clearly recognizes what kind of legend he's working with, and he's giving it his all too and having a blast with it.
Once again, no credits beyond our singers and songwriter, Shoko Fujibayashi.
As a warning, I did have to turn to Google Translate, both for Spanish and Japanese, to cover the gaps in my Spanish education. And it's not a perfectly literal translation, since I wanted to try to capture the overall feel of the song, and there were some one-to-one translations that felt awkward in English and needed a bit of a change. Most notably is "tratando de derrotarlo," which means "trying to defeat it," and I actually went with "don't lose to it" because it felt like it flowed better into the next line while getting the overall feel of the line. Some lines have alternate translations included, if only because I really couldn't figure out which worked better, and there are a couple lines that still feel awkward to me no matter what, but I did my best.
Also, um, I might have replaced a line that kind of feels like an Abaranger shoutout ("abaredasu michi no chikara wo") with a Kyouryuger/Dino Charge shoutout. Oops.
