B5 movie

JMS posted images from the animated Babylon 5 movie.

I'll admit, I'm not crazy about the art style, but it's in the same way I'm not crazy about it from the Netflix Ultraman anime. There's something about this semi-3D artwork that just throws me off. It's not bad, by any means, just not my preference.

B5????

JMS, what is this supposed to mean?!

...Good god 2023 has turned into the "SURPRISE!" year when it comes to stuff I like.

Babylon 5

So apparently JMS is going to make a reboot of B5 for the CW?

I mean, on the one hand, I'm not crazy about reboots. Period.

But at the same time, this can be done well in the right hands. Treat it less as a straight-up "this is the new canon now" thing and just go "this is an alternate universe of what could have happened, especially with some of the ideas we wanted to try initially that we couldn't execute at the time," and treat them both as valid parts of canon. I guess kind of like what I've been seeing out of the Ultra franchise, which has an established multiverse and has picks and chooses what canon points it wants to play with over the decades. Not a fan of Leo and Zero as a continuation of Seven? There's a continuity just focusing on Seven. Wonder what things might have been like if Hayata never regained his memories of Ultraman? There's a continuity for that.

Another thing would definitely be to be CAREFUL updating the look and feel of the setting. It's what I'm not crazy about in Star Trek, where things look TOO sleek and shiny and...well, Apple and Tesla. Absolutely, improve things now that the technology or budget allows for it. There's always going to be some evolution, but take the flaws for what they are and make them look GOOD. Like the way Hideaki Anno's Shin Kamen Rider looks so far in one of its first trailers. It looks sharp, recreating the opening theme of the original series while updating the look just enough to say "This costume is not going to fall apart while you're watching unless we want it to."

So I kind of have this morbid curiosity about it. Are there things that we can get away with now? Trans Delenn? Mind you, just about the only thing that was preventing that was Mira Furlan hating the makeup. Maybe the process is easier to pull off now? Maybe we've got the tech now to show off more alien-looking aliens in full? Can we tell Sinclair's story in full now, and if so, will Sheridan have a part to play in the story? What about Talia? Will she exist as a character because she was created as a replacement for Lyta, only to be replaced herself in a gut-wrenching story?

Basically, what if this story is "How do you tell Babylon 5 without all the executive meddling and behind the scenes chaos that shaped the story and characters? Will it still be Babylon 5?"

So again. Mixed feelings, but curiosity. I don't think that it'll go and totally replace the original, given how much love there is. I can tell that yeah, they would have loved to do more continuations if not for...well, many members of the cast passing away unexpectedly. So...I'll have to see what it ends up looking like.

Nothing will ever make this right.

Title: Of Ducks and Dukes
Fandom: Babylon 5
Summary: Some days, Ivanova feels like blowing up the station. When Londo attempts to discuss Garibaldi's (second) favorite thing in the universe with her, she feels like starting with him.
akinoame: (Survive)
Is it bad that I kinda think this sums up the issue between Kitaoka and Asakura?
akinoame: (Lantern blossoms)
Huh. Didn't realize that OOO/B5 crossover was still lurking around in my brain until my rewatch of River of Souls. I have this awkward-but-pleasant talk between Lochley and Eiji over something that passes for green tea (they got it in Brown Sector). It's not even half-formed, but I just like that Lochley's better at handling this kind of thing compared to, say, Nuke 'Em.

Should probably see if Amazon Streaming will let me screencap so I can icon her. Otherwise, I'll have to beg Ajora/bribe with cookies.
akinoame: (Kairi)
Today's "Fuck it, B5 Day" is River of Souls. Corwin is adorable, along with his Love Bat. Not gonna lie, I could use one sometimes. At least Lochley's reprogrammed one.

Also love "Turn Zack loose on them" as a threat. Must remember this for the other Zack when I review Gaim.

Also, the guy who runs the holo-brothel reads Lecherous magazine, something I didn't notice when I first watched this. I didn't realize that print media was still going to be so popular in 200 years, or so honest.

Edit: Also, this sounds like a predictive argument about revenge porn and leaked nude pics online.
akinoame: (Why?!)
Anxiety is right back up to an all-time high with me worrying about stupid little shit tangentially related to the exam (how will the traffic be on the way back? I have to wake up earlier tomorrow to open at work; how will this affect my energy Friday? I had math-related nightmares yesterday and never actually rested; what if I have them again?), and I feel like there is no possible way I can get any more information into my head. Oh, and I'm worrying about the stuff I purposely put off so I wouldn't be worrying about it while studying, such as RP, writing, and even just catching up on my shows.

Tomorrow is "Fuck it, B5 Day." Only then will I be able to zen the fuck out.
akinoame: (Goodnight my love)
Just finished The Long Night of Centauri Prime.

Londo, your life-choices. They are biting you in the tentacles.

I wish there was another universe somewhere where he, Timov, Senna, and Vir had a happily ever after.

I figure, while I still have some degree of brainpower, I should do a quick writeup on the commanders of Babylon 5 and what I liked about them or didn't like about them. I kinda want to do a writeup on all the major players, but I know I won't have the energy.

Spoilers for B5 )

A little thought of mine, while rewatching In the Beginning.

"The Babylon Station will provide a place for us to work out our problems peacefully. It is, we believe, our last, best hope for peace." - The President of the Earth Alliance.

It sank into the swamp

So they built a second

That sank into the swamp

So they built a third

That burned down, fell over, sank into the swamp

But the fourth one stayed up!

And then was sent back in time

I need to send back [personal profile] ajora's B5 DVDs soon. Lost Tales was good--a little different, in terms of genre, but good. And I like Lochley (this is a thing with me, apparently), and I was glad to see she made Colonel. In a lot of ways, I think she made B5 her station in a way Sinclair and Sheridan didn't quite manage--especially on Sheridan, I think. And as far as Asmodeus is concerned, I'm just assuming this is some Vorlon shit that got out of hand again (because what else?).

I do want to rewatch the main 5 movies over Memorial Day weekend--at least The Gathering and In the Beginning, since it's been a little while since I last saw them. And then I'll make sure to get them back.
akinoame: (Yuto/Airi)
I'm liking the idea of Gideon and Lochley as non-exclusive fuckbuddies.

Also, Max has a heart. And a love of his cat. Go figure.
akinoame: (RPM)
It's different from B5, but not too bad so far. Not crazy about the music, but the cast seems fun.

Also, I like that Galen bypassed the "who are you?" question to Gideon. I mean, sure, he technically knows him well enough that Gideon would be confused, but I did a little research on the technomages and where their powers came from, and knowing their origins. Yeah. Would make sense to skip straight to "what do you want?"

And how long will it be before I start shipping them? Because they have a Kosh/Sheridan thing going on, but more reciprocal.

And I think I'm going to like Matheson. Something about him being a telepath in the post-Psi Corps era is really interesting.
akinoame: (Damon)
A bit of commentary while watching the movie.

Oh boy
Black guy. We're seeing his family
His daughter is having a bad dream
He promises to keep the nightmares away from her
This guy's not surviving the movie

HyprKnux 1 10:50 pm
Oh, of course not. If there was a checklist, that right there would have marked off everything.
...no, wait, he's missing the love interest.

Akino Ame 10:50 pm
Family
His wife was the one he called
Adorable daughter came in

HyprKnux 1 10:50 pm
Okay, NOW he's doomed

Akino Ame 10:50 pm
He checked off everything on the Hughes List
AND he's the only black guy in this movie

HyprKnux 1 10:51 pm
He's dead.

Akino Ame 10:51 pm
He's dead

So I really liked this movie. It wasn't as epic as Thirdspace, but it was a great story, and I have a weakness for Soul Hunters and Lochley.

Insert gushing here )
akinoame: (Whelmed)
Why am I writing Babylon 5/OOO fic stuff now?

Right. Because it was going to happen sooner or later.

At least all I've got is just "Annoyed Zack" and "Eiji in underwear."
