On the subject of normalcy...What if the residents of the town are distinctly lacking in 100% humanity? I mean Kevin's aunt and uncle OBVIOUSLY knew about the alien in the family and it's already been shown that there are numerous instances of aliens and humans crossbreeding so it's quite possible that you're getting a subtle cue that the town's populated by normal people that are, at least genetically, about as far from normal as you can get.
