I'm starting to wonder exactly how dorky Eugene Son is. This episode of Ultimate Alien was definitely a love letter to the '90s, and while I appreciate the nod to my generation, it had me wondering if they knew that Ben's childhood is part of the next decade. So he shouldn't know about pogs and Kevin wouldn't have grown up watching X-Files or Captain Planet. Also, apparently, Captain Planet was an incredibly obscure show in the Ben 10 verse and/or the Nostalgia Critic didn't exist. Because otherwise, there'd be somebody to remember it so Kevin won't have to.

Also, I can't help but think of Kevin as Ma-Ti for some reason.

Overall the story was kind of dull. And it really didn't get any resolution. The Pacific Garbage Vortex does indeed exist, and I know this without looking this up. Why, do you ask? Is it because I'm as big a nerd as Gwen and Kevin combined? Yes, but that's beside the point. It's because this is becoming a huge problem after the Sendai earthquake/tsunami--all of the debris washed away is making its way toward western shores. Or east, rather, given the directionality. And just like the scary as hell coincidence of "Viktor, The Spoils" airing during the start of the revolution in Egypt, I doubt they could have written this during the Sendai earthquake. But when there is a pre-existing condition, it kind of feels like a slap in the face when you see Ben send all of that garbage into the sun. At the very least, we see that he can't save the earth completely and it's still going to be there, but it still felt strange. Environmentalism and superhero cartoons rarely mesh well. No matter how much HEART you have.

So, yeah. Captain Planet, X-Files. Not quite namedropped because Kevin is a fail 90s Kid (also ironic timing given major stuff going on with that character lately in Atop the Fourth Wall--no way they could have predicted that even if they do watch Linkara). I was hoping for a Power Rangers reference, but I guess the only reason why they don't ever seem to make one when it's calling for it (dude, it's the 90s and there's a giant monster. Why NOT the Power Rangers?) is that they're part of the same universe. I thought the walking Ultraman reference that is Way Big was cheating because he's from the '60s, but a quick look-up tells me that Ultraman took place in the distant future of the 1990s. Plus, I thought the new theme they gave Way Big sounded an awful lot like the theme, but it might just be me. So Eugene Son might be a dorkier writer than I thought.

Guess it can only be expected for a guy who randomly shouts, "IT'S HERO TIME!" to anyone wearing a bright green jacket.

Also, this is apparently my minireview for the week. Wondering about the writer's dork level.
