akinoame: (Team Rider)

I have this one saying, a running gag that you'll hear especially in Gaim: "Riders can't drown."

Now, yes. There are some exceptions. But keep in mind that Ryo Ashihara of Agito is the only Rider to die by drowning; Takatora in Gaim actually survived, but had brain damage from going without oxygen for so long.

And if we take this back to Agito, remember that Shoichi, Agito himself, was found washed up on the beach with no memories after going overboard on the Akatsuki after the battle with the El of Water. That's a long way to shore, and he still survived.

A little research showed me the mammalian diving reflex, which is responsible for all of those pictures of babies underwater. Given how prevalent "not drowning" is in Kamen Rider--another clue to Takumi's nature as an Orphnoch in 555 is when he lands unconscious, facedown in the water and has to be fished out by Yuka, and there's all of the times Eiji in OOO was thrown off a bridge or otherwise reinacted the Shoichi scene from the opening by waking up from water lapping underneath him--I wonder if maybe Riders, or most Heisei Riders at least, have an abnormally strong mammalian diving reflex.

Well, that doesn't sound too strange when I say it. But here's the weird part--where would it have become so strong? After all, that reflex is weak in humans. Why is there this convenient pool of people with that reflex who all transform into the same type of hero?

They must have gotten it from the same source that Shoichi did: from the Overlord of Light as a final "fuck you" to the Overlord of Darkness.

Most of the Heisei Riders, thus, are potential Agitos.

Which would be an amazing way to tie the Heisei Rider series together. Just one little thing, one little gene that may not necessarily make them an actual Agito or give them the powers, but maybe it's just one of a few that need to be triggered. After all, Ryo did drown (though he's shown in-universe to be able to stay underwater for a very long period of time, i.e. strong diving reflex). He's said not to be an Agito, but as Gills, he's something similar--so he has a similar gene that may have mutated from the Agito gene.

Move onto Takumi; he's an Orphnoch. What if the Orphnoch gene is another mutation of the Agito gene?

Eiji and Takatora were more of "right place, right time" in order to become Riders. Well, that, and Takatora was a boss in the company that MADE the Sengoku Drivers in the first place, so he got dibs on the cool stuff. Perhaps Takatora was scouted by Ryoma for that very gene--it would explain why Ryoma was so confident that Takatora would become a god if they found the apple. Eiji wasn't scouted at all, but maybe a latent Agito gene may have given him just enough to survive the harsh conditions of the war; the psychological effects of war were what made him an ideal OOO.
