So I got to see this episode early on Nick.com, which is awesome because I wouldn't be able to catch it the day it premiered anyway. So two Ranger reviews in one day--nice.
Honestly, so far, so good. Troy still has less personality than an argyle sock, but they're trying by offering him a quest--to find Robo Knight. But the real stars were...well, not quite as much the other Rangers as much as humanity in general.
"Super Megaforce" took the first episode of Gokaiger and the final episode of PRiS and combined them while continuing to bring out the human spirit that both celebrated. In Gokaiger, the team really had no reason to fight to save the Earth other than "We really hate the Zangyack," and in PRiS, the people of Angel Grove finally decided it was time to stand up for the heroes who'd saved them time after time. But Gokaiger lacked a heroic spirit from the Gokaigers in the first episode, and PRiS had the citizens of Angel Grove doubt the Rangers before standing up for them. Here, the human spirit is on full display. The Mega Rangers search the ruins of the city to try to find survivors--Emma fights her way through the mall and rescues Ernie at the smoothie place, and Noah defeats every X-Borg in the high school before finding two students in hiding and charging them with finding the remaining students and trying to make things normal again. Emma and Noah are heroes in the way that Ahim and Joe weren't, and the citizens of Hargrove County are more resilient than the citizens of Angel Grove--when the Rangers return to school the next day, the students have fixed up almost everything, but there's still nobody there to teach them. So Noah goes and finds Mr. Burley in his office, trying to keep his things from breaking, and not only does he help save the man's things, but he basically tells him to do his job--he's a teacher, and who's been running the school and taking care of everything? The students. This is my criticism of Mr. Burley in a nutshell, and Noah is kind about it while getting him to go back to the classroom and teach the students who have braved terror and tragedy to try and return to a normal life. And Mr. Burley sums up the theme of the episode: In the first season, he asked which species was most likely to survive, and Troy had said humanity, because when they pull together, they could do anything. And Hargrove County did that in a way that PRiS didn't.
Megaforce may have been off to a really painfully slow start, trying to recapture the lost spark of MMPR, but Super Megaforce seems to be doing it right so far. It's not enough to emulate the past, be it a previous season like PRiS or the Sentai, Gokaiger. You have to honor them by taking their lessons and...well, bringing them to their super mega mode. Take those legends and repaint them in your own colors--with any luck, Saban Era II may have finally found its way.

Date: 2014-02-10 03:59 am (UTC)...is it weird that part of what I love most about the Gokaigers is their complete lack of giving a crap most of the time? It's just so amusingly awesome. I knew I was going to love the series entirely due to the resturant scene in the first episode and their reactions to everything that goes on there.
The scene in episode 4 or so where they just sit GokaiOh in the center of town brute-forcing Ranger Keys to see if they do anything while the townspeople look on in curiosity, then get bored and walk off cements it.

Also, as someone who's never watched a Sentai before a Rangers season before, seeing Warz Gill used as a supposedly serious threat is... surreal. So's the Gigant Horse being used to heavy metal.
