Zero fic stuff

Okay, so I watched the Leo episode of Mebius and I have some idea now of what kind of shit that Leo put Zero through in training. Thank god none of the "throw things at the face" shit that Dan did in the 70s.
Gen says that he's assigned far from Earth, which technically COULD mean that he's assigned to watch Zero at that point, but...it still seems weird to me that literally anyone would let him take off like that. I'll have to plow through Mebius too in order to get a better feel for if that's possible or not.
Other stuff that helps? The Z and Zero voice drama heavily implies that Zero never went to the Inter Galactic Defense Force Academy. He suggests that Zett focus on his studies there, Zett's all "Oh, Master Zero, you must have been an amazing student!" And Zero does this:

The music cuts out and he freezes, speechless.
Now, yes. Zero is a dumbass. However, throughout the first movie they talked about how much potential he had. He was a prodigy, like Mebius before him. The Land of Light is in the middle of this run of extremely young, extremely talented Ultras, both on their own planet and on others (Hikaru was 17 when he became Ginga, Riku was 19 and a VERY powerful Ultra, Taiga is the equivalent of 14, Titas and Fuma are also supposed to be teenagers...Zero has a point when he says that Zett is "one-third" a hero, based on the tail end of the Heisei era he's following). So that seems more likely to me that Zero just never attended the academy. This nicely settles the issue of Mebius and Taro--that Mebius knows of his reputation, but neither he nor Zero seems to have really met the other before they fight Belial, and that Taro isn't at all considered one of Zero's teachers.
